01 Overview

Having backups is not the same as being able to restore them, and the difference tends to surface on the worst possible day: the nightly dump turns out to have been failing since March, or a 400GB restore takes eleven hours nobody planned for. We run a real restore into an isolated environment, check that the data is complete and consistent, and time every step. You get measured recovery figures instead of assumptions, and a written procedure that someone else on the team could follow at 3am.
